I will be staying at the Hotel Monaco at the end of March and would like some suggestions for restaurants. I will be traveling with my husband and 8 year old son. During the day we will be in DC, but in the evening would like to enjoy Old Town. We will be in casual clothes and really don%26#39;t want anything where you have to have a jacket and tie. Thanks for your help!
Restaurant Suggestions please!
You%26#39;ll have dozens of choices in easy walking distance, none of which require a jacket and tie.
Up King Street from your hotel, you might like Eamonn%26#39;s, a delicious fish and chips place that is high-end enough for grownups but your son will think he%26#39;s getting the best fishsticks ever. Also up the street is a Greek place called Taverna Cretekou, if your son is more adventurous.
Restaurant Suggestions please!
Personally, I wouldn%26#39;t recommend Taverna Cretekou, I thought the food was lousy, but that was a few years ago. I definitely agree with the Eammonn%26#39;s recommendation, though. With an 8 year old, I%26#39;d go with Austin Grill (Tex-Mex) and Hard Times Cafe (various types of chili). Both are fun and kid-friendly. Some other places to look into not far from your hotel, Union Street Public House and Overwood Grill.
Another kid-friendly restaurant choice would be King Street Blues, which is about 2 blocks from the Hotel Monaco. Very laid back atmosphere.
I second the recommendation for a visit to Hard Times! Loads of fun for kids and definately a casual environment. You might also try the Austin Grill, a more Tex-Mex type of place that%26#39;s fun for kids.
Living here in Old Town, I think I get the greatest pleasure in NOT deciding in advance where to eat for dinner. My favorite thing to do is head either direction from Monaco and read the menu%26#39;s to fit your mood. The selection gets more ethnic and (I think) cheaper as you go west on King.
I agree...you have to spend one night at Hard Times..but be forewarned...it%26#39;s insanity at prime dinner hour. One other good family choice is South Austin Grill. You will find few to no restaurants requiring coat and tie. (possible exception being Le Bergerie (sp?)) Also, even the ';fancy'; restaurants are fine for 8 year olds. Don%26#39;t overlook Vermillion if that%26#39;s an option.
Jackson 20 is the hotel restaurant, prices look pretty good...however, reservations are recommended...lots of interest in this new venue that just opened two weeks ago. Only word is that its entirely noisey which has been a consistent theme in critiques.
Have fun and go with no special plans and I%26#39;m sure you will go home totally enthralled with our little city! Hope this helps.
