Passing through the Hampton Roads of Va. this July 4th 5th and 6th. Looking for an area that would provide some activities since neither of these places have an outdoor pool, without traveling to a beach(headed there Sun. for a week) Since it is a holiday week-end, A good place to catch some fire works on the 4th. We haven%26#39;t been in this area last couple of years. Last time through we stayed in the Hampton area at the Raddison. Which is no longer there. Heard that Portmouths is a quaint little town with shops and restaurants. True?? Would like to hear from Anyone with knowledge of this area. Trying to decided between Postsmouth or Newport News.
Thanks
Portsmouth,Renaissance OR Newport News Marriott???
The Hampton Radisson is now an indep called Hampton Marina Hotel, www.hamptonmarinahotel.com, 757 727-9700. Appears to be about the same as before but I have not stayed there. On the waterfront in downtown Portsmouth consider the Renaissance or cross the river to downtown Norfolk and try the Mariott Waterside. There will probably be fireworks in the downtown area (waterfront) for July 4th. If you are interested in Newport News, let us know the general area and that will halp narrow the search or check TA NN hotel section for ideas. Hope this helps. Enjoy your time in the area.
Portsmouth,Renaissance OR Newport News Marriott???
Yes, there will be fireworks over the river between Portsmouth and Norfolk, so you could stay on either side for the fun. Up and down High Street in Portsmouth are many antique shops, a few art galleries, and several wonderful restaurants - I surely hope locals support them. There is a Naval Museum, Children%26#39;s Museum, Sports Museum, and a lovely historic district of old homes and churches.
Across the river Norfolk offers fine shopping at McArthur Center, Nauticus (all things water and weather museum), Battleship Wisconsin, Chrysler Museum of Art, McArthur Memorial, upscale dining, and a lively bar scene. If the Tides (Orioles farm team) are in town, you can catch a ball game - ride the ferry over if you%26#39;re staying in Portsmouth.
I don%26#39;t know the fireworks situation in Newport News -- I%26#39;m sure they have them but I can%26#39;t think where but most likely it%26#39;ll be at a large park or over water. Mariners Museum is wonderful. If you opt for NN, you might look into hotels around Oyster Point. This is the new town center with lots of shops and eateries.
