Planning a visit to Mount Vernon in February. Any hints or advice would be appreciated! (Driving down from DC)
Thanks in advance!
Visit to Mount Vernon
You might want to go on President%26#39;s Day. In the past, they have offered free admission.
Visit to Mount VernonIf you haven%26#39;t visited their website, it%26#39;s www.mtvernon.com
Weekends through Feb. 10, the basement where a scene from National Treasure: Book of Secrets was filmed will be open for tours; it%26#39;s a space not usually open to the public.
I haven%26#39;t been since the new orientation center and museum opened. There is a restaurant and a food court for meals and snack.
Be aware that you have to stand in line outdoors in order to tour the mansion. Fortunately, the line should not be too long in February, but dress for the weather.
There are several free tours of other parts of the grounds (slave quarters, gardens, etc.) offered during the day, so you might want to schedule some time to do those.
While the free admission on Presidents%26#39; Day is a great deal, it will also mean there are more visitors and longer lines for entrance to the mansion. Take that into consideration when you plan your visit.
Thanks for the info... we will not be in the area for George%26#39;s birthday! so...we%26#39;ll avoid the ';party'; crowds!
Mount Vernon runs a program ';Colonial Days'; from Feb. 20 - March 14. The mornings are very crowded with school groups but they clear out at noon. Plan your visit accordingly and try to time your visit for the afternoon to avoid these elementary school kids. With the new education center and museum you can easily spend 4+ hours touring the house, grounds and these indoor spaces.
We hope to be there on Sunday, Feb. 3 in the morning, so we should avoid the school groups! (Have to be back at the hotel for the super bowl! LOL!)
