We%26#39;ll be driving from Erie Pennsylvania to Charleston in early March. We%26#39;d like to take our time and stop half way. What%26#39;s the most scenic place to stay overnight? We%26#39;ll arrive early afternoon and have about half a day for sightseeing.
Scenic Town between Erie and Charleston?
Check out Charlottesville Virginia.
Scenic Town between Erie and Charleston?
I%26#39;m not sure which way you%26#39;re traveling, but I%26#39;ll second that nomination for Charlottesville. Another city to consider is Richmond - it doesn%26#39;t have the vista views, but it%26#39;s a historical city with beautiful old Victorians.
Route is the I-79 - US-19 - I-77
Oh, that%26#39;s a good route. I%26#39;d take a few nights myself. You%26#39;ll be passing comparatively briefly through Va. in the area called Southwest Va which comprises places like Galax and Wytheville, passing the Appalachian Trail and Jefferson National Forest. Great scenery and country music. I%26#39;ll finish later...have a sudden errand...but you get the idea.
Excellent - then Richmond and Charlottesville are way out of your way. There%26#39;s not a whole lot going on in Wytheville and Galax, but they certainly sit pretty surrounded by the mountains. They%26#39;re big enough to find decent places to stay.
Check http//visit.wytheville.com, and www.visitgalax.com
Drive a little further to Mt. Airy, the ';real'; Mayberry. www.visitmayberry.com
SW Va. is an area known for it%26#39;s old-time music.
Galax is where the Annual Old Fiddler%26#39;s Convention is held (73rd year this year) in Aug. And Wytheville has a Chatauqua Festival in June. While you won%26#39;t be there during those times, that gives you a little insight. I believe Wytheville begins its Appalachian History through music program in Feb.
Go here for one-stop shopping info on Wytheville: http://www.visitwytheville.com/tour.htm There are several places to stay in this area.
There%26#39;s a poster who sometimes posts in Va. and mostly in NC on this area. bud41 I think is the name. This poster is full of info about the area and fiddling and country music and scenery, etc. Below are the TA links for posts of his and others regarding this area:
