Onancock, VA

I%26#39;m renting a house in July in Onancock, VA, and will be spending a few days staying locally. We are already planning to go south a few days and check out all the areas on the other side of the bay, however, does anyone have any knowledge of the Onancock area and what my family should do. Also, please advise of any fishing charters. Thanks all.

You%26#39;re not far from Chincoteague and Assateague Island. Assteague is a beautiful place with wild ponies and birds. Oh yea, they have a mosquito or two also.

Look under Assateague Island, VA on the menu,

I don%26#39;t recall how far Onancock is but its in the area.

You can always go to Tangier Island, you get the boat right in Onancock. It is a step back in time, you can either walk around the island, rent a bike or a golf cart.We walked and did our own tour then back to the docks for lunch. The ride over to the island was fun also.

Onancock is a fun place to visit. They have antique shops, wonderful art galleries, fabulous restaurants (I%26#39;m from Los Angeles-I know good restaurants).

You can visit the nearby Parksley Railroad Museum, the in town Ker Place (a colonial museum).

Onancock is in the center of the Eastern Shore, so no place is very far from it.

If you have a weekend to spare, arrive on Friday, stay at a local inn, have a great dinner, see live theatre or an international film. On Saturday, wander the town and local areas. Most of the shops and galleries in Eastern Shore towns are closed on Sunday, so Sunday is perfect to see Tangier Island or Chincoteaque or Kipoteke nature preserves. Take a kayak around the creek or cruise the Bay.

Its a great place for hiking and biking and eco travel. Most of the Inns are green lodgings too. And the town is dog friendly.

Have fun

We stayed a week in Chincoteague last summer. We took a day trip to Tangier, taking the boat from Onancock. Tangier was fascinating to me, but we wished we had more time to explore Onancock, too.

There are a couple of wineries on the Eastern Shore, if that interests you. Bloxom is one, Chatham in Machipongo is the other. We bought wines at both and enjoyed our brief visits.
