We will be visiting the area for just one day (mid March) and I understand that there is so much to see and do there. It will be me, hubbie, and 10 year old son (who%26#39;s been studying early American History and loved the Jamestown reenactments.)
What would you say is the #1 thing to do in Williamsburg/Jamestown?
1 Day in Williamsburg/Jamestown - What's the Best?
I love CW, but I would have to say Historic Jamestowne (the island) for 1/2 day, drive the loop, stop at the glass house. Or do the glass house first. It may open earlier than the rest of the site. Then go over to Jamestown Settlement for lunch and the afternoon. If you%26#39;ll be here in the evening, possibly book a Tavern Ghost Tour, or just walk around the historic area before or after dinner.
No matter what you do, you will miss something else of interest, so plan a trip back as soon as you can!
1 Day in Williamsburg/Jamestown - What's the Best?
Hi Pam, Wow, this is a hard one. Too bad you only have one day. If you%26#39;ve read any of my posts, you know I am partial to the Jamestownes. Can I assume that you%26#39;ve been there before? Since you say your son loved the reenactments? CW is also awesome, but there is so much to see, Governors Palace, the Capital, the shoppes with reenactors, Evening programs, Great Hopes Plantation etc, etc. I love Jamestowne Historic Island. Great new museum, and archealogical digs, which I%26#39;m not sure if they do the digs in the winter time.
Whatever you decide, have a great time, and let us know how much fun you had!!!
Thanks for your info. This is our first visit to the area. I%26#39;m getting that Jamestown Island might be the best, in your opinion. I will save your message for all the other advice too. Thanks again.
Do you think you will ever visit again? If not, I would probably suggest the day in CW to see the historic sites: the Capitol, the Palace, Peyton Randolph House, George Wythe House. You will hear some wonderful history stories when you tour them. (The interpreter at the Wythe House was superb when we were there in October.) Stop at the Raleigh Tavern if it is open, and then go through the tavern bakery to get a sweet treat and cold drink. However, if you can, you really need to adjust your plans to spend more time in the Historic Triangle. It will be sad for you to make such a long trip and have to choose between CW and the Jamestowns.
Yep, I also agree with RQT. I wish you had more time. You know that there are 2 Jamestownes? Jamestown Settlement, which has a great new museum, Native American Village, replicas of the 3 ships that you can board, (at least one of them), and a replication of James Fort. There is also a cafe/cafeteria.
Historic Jamestowne Island is the original spot where the colonists settled. It is a wonderful place, but I got a feeling your 10 year old would really enjoy the Settlement.
Also, in between both sites is the Glasshouse, where they have glassblowing demonstrations.
RQT has given some great suggestions.
Again, have a great trip and let us know how things work out. from mary.
