Need info on hotels in Norfolk

we are going to a conference for handicapped children in July. We can%26#39;t afford to stay at the Waterfront Marriott where the conference is. We were considering the Norfolk Radisson downtown or the American Best Value Inn which is further away. Does anyone know about either of these? Or, any other suggestions?

The Radisson is about 1/2 mi from Marriott Waterside; you can also take the ';Net';, an electric bus that runs throughout the downtown area. The Radisson is located several blocks from many good downtown restaurants but is also across the street from a housing project (well kept) and several industrial storefronts....not the greatest area but not bad (I would stay there if unable to stay at Marriott). The Americas Best Value is probably 4 mi from downtown in an area called Military Circle, there is a mall near the hotel (not necessarily walking distance). So if you stay there you definately need a car. Several chain restaurants are nearby, Olive Garden, Uno, steaks places etc. Depends on what you like, Radisson is a tall hotel in downtown, Americas Best is a motel in suburbs. Hope this helps. Post again if additional questions.

Here are a few things to consider:

Marriott Courtyard and Sheraton are also downtown but probably pricy like Marriott Waterside but you can try them. There are several good motels near the airport that should be reasonably priced, while I haven%26#39;t stayed at them, these would be my picks....Sleep Inn Lake Wright, Hampton Inn Airport, Ramada Inn Airport (you need a car for all of them, all about 4-5 mi from downtown). If you stay near the Naval Base (3-4 mi fm downtown), Hampton Inn Hampton Blvd or a Quality inn, you might get involved in a lot of traffic depending on when you would be going and coming, rush hours are rough, other times are fine. If you want to stay in Norfolk but like the beach, there is a Best Western Holiday Sands at Ocean View with some suites/kitchenettes, about 10+ mi from downtown. Check the reviews and see if something works for you. Good luck.

Thanks for the info.

I read some of the reviews for the Radisson, most were awful. Based on the reviews, I amend my previous opinion, I probably would not stay there.

The Am. Best Value is an older hotel that has gone through a number of owners over the years. The recent reviews are pretty positive, and the property does look very neat when I%26#39;ve passed by. It%26#39;s very convenient on/off the interstate that will take you right to downtown Norfolk for the conference. It%26#39;s much closer than any of the airport hotels. Honestly, there isn%26#39;t much nearby to recommend. Other hotels I could mention are just too far away.
