Hello! While my eldest son attends a conference in the northern VA/DC area, the rest of us in the family are going to play tourists!
I see an overwhelming list of hotel options while looking at Northern Virginia, as well as DC. We would like to stay somewhere that is convenient to dining, shopping and the sights (or to transportation to the sights). Nothing too close to the airport. Good service is important, though for a weeklong stay we do not want to spend more than $350/nite.
Any suggestions?

I see you have posts in the DC forum. Use the search feature in that forum-this is a common question there, and there are lots of suggestions. Common options are Crystal City or Arlington along the Orange Line of Metro.

I agree that you will probably get more responses if you post on the D.C. forum. For Arlington, the areas you would want to look at for accomodations would be Rosslyn, Courthouse and Ballston (along the Orange Line) and Pentagon City and Crystal City (along the Blue Line and Yellow Line).
And don%26#39;t forget Alexandria! On the Blue and Yellow Lines.
There is a clean nice Holiday Inn in Alexandria on Eisenhower Ave right off the Yellow Metro Line (one long city block). It%26#39;s a safe area and there are a few places to eat right across the street. Ted%26#39;s Montana Grill, Ruby Tuesdays, San Antonio Grill (Mexican), Galie Thai, Bread %26amp; Chocolate, Cold Stone, Starbucks and they have an ok resturant right in the hotel. There is even a AMC theatre there too so, you have something to do at night.
