Hey All,
We%26#39;re thinking about staying at the Hilton Garden Inn (rather than the Omni) for a weekend getaway in the near future. But the hilton seems to be a bit farther away from the downtown area... Are there taxis in C-ville to be flagged down? Would it be easier to just stay at the Omni, which as i understand, is right on the walking mall?
taxis/cabs in Charlottesville?
yes, there are taxis in c-ville. but, they are not as numerous as in a city setting. the only time they are around in high numbers to be flagged down is at night and close to bars. other than that, you%26#39;ll need to call and arrange for a cab to come and get you. and when you call, they can take a long time. if you are planning on spending a substantial amount of time on the downtown mall, i suggest staying at the omni. that way, you can come and go as you please and not get stuck waiting for a taxi cab. oh, also the cabs can be kind of expensive... like $4 or $5 dollars just to go a mile...

In addition to the normal overpriced cabs, Charlottesville is also home to a pair of the most unique overpriced cabs you%26#39;ll find. The Wahoopties.

The Hilton Garden Inn is on Pantops Mountain off of Route 250, which is wall-to-wall auto dealerships %26amp; fast food restaurants. Though the area that it is in -- Peter Jefferson Place -- is off the road %26amp; very pretty (rolling hills %26amp; walking paths) -- the Kluge-Ruhe museum is out there somewhere (along with a hospital %26amp; other major office buildings). But I don%26#39;t remember seeing restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, so to get downtown or elsewhere you%26#39;d have to drive (or call a taxi).
The Omni has a door right onto the downtown pedestrian mall (and is even within walking distance of UVa -- if you don%26#39;t mind a mile or two of walking). And the downtown mall has shops, restaurants, skating rink, movie theatre, etc.
And, no, there aren%26#39;t taxis prowling the streets looking for folks -- you generally have to give a taxi service a call to come fetch you.
