Driving advice

I keep reading that traffic is a bad. Do you have any driving style tips and advice for a southwesterner? My 16 yo son and I land at ORF early October for a 5day whirlwind hope to see some fall color trip. We%26#39;ll be at the Powhatan (sp?) Plantation. Perhaps a decade ago I went to Boston with my hubby. Shudders run through me at the experience and I wasn%26#39;t even behind the wheel.

Driving advice

Driving from Norfolk to Williamsburg is nothing like driving in Boston. Rush hours can be busy on I-64, and an accident can back up the highway. A tunnel back-up can be really slow. But it%26#39;s really something to be endured, not something to be afraid about, IMHO.

Driving advice

Driving in and around Norfolk/Newport News/Williamsburg is not bad. During rush hour in Norfolk, yes, there%26#39;s traffic, but not enough to be concerned, just like anywhere. You%26#39;ll be going in the off-season, children will be back in school, so not as many tourists on the road either. You%26#39;ll have a great time.

Coming in October, you should not have any traffic problems from the Norfolk airport unless there is an unforeseen accident or repair in the tunnel. You probably won%26#39;t find much fall color in this area that early in the autumn; more in the western mountainous part of the state.

Just to let you know the vacation was a success. Just beginning to turn color. However, that uh, tunnel someone mentioned? I think it might have been prudent to expand that it was in the middle of a bridge! This Arizona lady hasn%26#39;t ever had that unique experience of driving 55+ mph behind a semi and begin to head downwards while surrounded by water. The second time - when we headed back to the airport - it was awe-inspiring. Thank you all for your comments.

Thanks for your last message, I%26#39;m sure many locals got a nice smile (or laugh) from it. To us, a tunnel always has a bridge at each end so we would not think to mention it. For you, a tunnel might be cut through a mountain. Nice to have differences like that. Glad you enjoyed your trip to Virginia. Stay dry!

Guess it might have helped had we mentioned the tunnel names: Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel, Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel are three in the area!

I chuckled a bit too at the surprise of a tunnel with a bridge! Nice to get a bit of perspective on how others see your part of the world. Glad you had a good time, October is the perfect time to go to Williamsburg IMHO.
