We will be visiting Virginia Beach/Norfolk area next week. My husband will be attending classes during the day so I%26#39;m looking for some things to do with my 7 month old son. I think we%26#39;ll probably stroll the boardwalk a little depending on weather, and possibly check out the aquarium. Any other ideas in Virginia Beach or Norfolk? What time do the shops on the boardwalk open/close during the week? Thanks!
Visiting next week - suggestions on what to do
Strolling the boardwalk and making sand castles will be fun. The shops are not actually on the boardwalk, mostly the hotels are, but shops are only a short block (very short) away on Atlantic Ave. This time of year a few shops may not be open but most will open during the day 10-11am to 5-6pm or later especially on weekends. In the column to the left, click on ';things to do'; for Va Beach and also go to the Norfolk page and do the same. That will give you more ideas. The Virginia Zoo, small but nice, is located in Norfolk. You both may enjoy the petting area in the zoo. Downtown Norfolk has a nice waterfront, again a good place to walk and watch large boats and river traffic, sometimes a cruise ship is in, tugs are working, and you can catch the ferry over to Portsmouth (about $1/10 min ride) and go to the Children%26#39;s Museum (about 10 min walk from ferry). Lots to enjoy, hope you have nice weather.

When we%26#39;re at the beach every morning we see the moms with the big wheel carriages ambling, walking, fast walking along the concrete boardwalk. Not only tourists, but lots of locals come to enjoy the three miles span of beauty to walk by.
Check out vbfun.com and see if an event interests you.
Also click on Things to Do and click on the %26#39;articles%26#39;.
Remember to bring lots of high spf for your little one even in winter since light reflects off the sand/water/concrete.
Are you staying on the boardwalk or inland?
We%26#39;re staying closer to Norfolk. I sure hope the weather is nice - I%26#39;m really looking forward to the long walks on the boardwalk.
Thank you for the tip on sunscreen! I would not have thought of that.
I%26#39;ll check out some of the articles on this site and the other site.
Thanks!
goneagain2 - thanks for the ideas in Norfolk. I hadn%26#39;t thought of the waterfront there. I think we%26#39;ll check out the ferry idea. My little guy would probably really like seeing the ships. Thanks!
When you are at the oceanfront or downtown Norfolk waterfront it will likely be somewhat windy. The Norf waterfront has several nice areas; Waterside is a bldg with Ben %26amp; Jerry%26#39;s, %26amp; other food (all I care about is ice cream!), the ferry is just outside, and lots of boats, the walkway (to the right, away from the large bridge) leads you along the river to Towne Point Park, a grassy area where concerts/festivals are often held in summer, walk a bit further and you will reach Nauticus Maritime Museum, Cruise ship dock and The USS Wisconsin (free). The entire waterfront is usually busy with ship/boat activity, fun to watch on a nice day. In case of bad weather, go to the MacArthur Center Mall 2 blocks from waterfront at Monticello Av and City Hall Av, nice shops, Nordstrom, Dillards, Cheesecake Cafe, Movies. The Zoo is only 10 min from the downtown area. Enjoy.
Found this at TA%26#39;s VB weblinks. Several are for summer...but many are all season:

There is a nice playground area at Mount Trashmore - I%26#39;m guessing there are baby swings, but I%26#39;m not certain. McArthur Center also has a play area, but it%26#39;s for toddlers - not sure how much a 7-month-old will get out of it, but it%26#39;ll be a nice place for you to rest.
