I am planning a week-end trip to Arlington, Virginia and I plan on being in Richmond one day (Sunday, April 6th). Can anyone offer me insight on what to do and see while there? Any great inexpensive restaurants that you would recommend as well?
Things to do in Richmond? Also, could you tell me if there are any microbrew pubs in the area that are open for lunch?
Things to do in Richmond?I can answer your second question pretty easily, but I%26#39;d like to know a little more about your interests in order to answer the first question.
We%26#39;ve got two types of microbrew pubs in Richmond: those that serve their own beer (brewery/brewpubs), and those who serve everyone else%26#39;s (pubs with microbrews).
In the first category, there%26#39;s Legend%26#39;s, with the fabulous deck overlooking downtown Richmond, and the most consistently good brewery beer:

Food is not a strong point, but on a nice day, there%26#39;s not many nicer places to hang out in Richmond.
There%26#39;s also Richbrau, which if you%26#39;re in Shockoe Slip, is a nice place to stop (food slightly better than Legend, but definitely not worth going just for the food):

In the second category I can recommend two places, which couldn%26#39;t be more different. First is Capital Ale House, which has 3 locations in the Richmond area. I%26#39;m most familiar with their downtown location:

The other is Commercial Tap House, which is a local neighborhood hangout in the Fan (111 North Robinson St). Not as many taps as CAH, but always a fine selection. Both of these places have pretty good food, with CAH being more ambitious, Commercial does good solid bar food. I think Commercial is closed on Sundays though.
So, if it%26#39;s a nice day, Legend%26#39;s, and if not or you can%26#39;t get a seat outside there, try Capital Ale House.
Let me know what kind of things you like to do, or more about you, and I%26#39;ll give you some other ideas of how to spend your day in Richmond.
Thank you...Legends sounds just what we are looking for in terms of microbrews.
I like seeing historical places. I heard that Monticello is not far from Richmond, is that true? I actually driving to Richmond to see a band that is playing there whom I follow. So my afternoon and early evening is wide open.
Monticello is about 70 miles from Richmond. It takes me about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there. If you%26#39;ve never been there, and you enjoy history, you should definitely go. Spring is a wonderful time to go, when the gardens are lovely, and walking the grounds is so pleasant.
Check www.monticello.org for more info.
In Richmond, for historical places - White House of the Confederacy, Civil War Museum at waterfront, the State Capitol building gives a wonderful tour, and Maymont plantation is very nice.
richmond has a pretty impressive holocaust museum, too, if you%26#39;re into that.
but yeah, maymont park is an absolutely wonderful way to spend an hour or two wandering around...there%26#39;s also carytown if you%26#39;re into shopping or wandering around. there%26#39;s a used cd store there called plan 9 that is pretty fun to browse in.
:)
