I recently visited Little Washington - charming town, cute shops, etc. As I was leaving a police officer pulled me over for doing 50. Since he was sitting next to a 45mph sign I thought everything was fine. Apparently I was in a 35mph zone (where was that sign?) so he wrote me a ticket. Don%26#39;t think the out of state plates helped. I had planned to visit Little Washington again and take my family. Not now. They%26#39;ve gotten enough revenue out of me. Beware!
Speed Trap in Little Washington
As a resident and business owner in Little Washington, I want to applaud our police department for finally doing something about speeding in our small town. I know this isn%26#39;t what you want to hear, CharlotteNCFoodie, but I can assure you that the town does not set up speed traps targeted at visitors. Residents have been fighting for speed limit enforcement for over four years and finally our newly elected sheriff has taken action. A number of locals have also been ticketed recently, so no one is exempt.
The fact is our speed limits are necessary. This town, established in the 1700s, has houses that nearly touch the street and Main Street is mostly without sidewalks because there%26#39;s no room for them. Visitors and townspeople alike must walk on this road every day to go into shops and collect mail at the post office. Several locals must walk well past the 25 mph zone into the 35 mph zone (yes, there is one) and all the way to the 45 mph to their homes.
So please, slow down a bit and enjoy the breathtaking countryside while driving through Little Washington. Our lives and the lives of our children depend on it.
