Hi all! We%26#39;re planning a trip to Williamsburg in June 2008, driving from the Pittsburgh area, family of 4 with 2 teenage boys. I%26#39;m a photo nut and don%26#39;t really care for swimming, so I figured the day that my hubby and boys go to Water Country, I%26#39;ll spend the day on a photo safari of the historic area. Since we%26#39;ll only have 1 car, I need to find a hotel that is within walking distance of the historic area, and hopefully I won%26#39;t have to cross a 6-lane super-highway. We%26#39;re on a budget (oldest son will start college in the fall), so places like the Williamsburg Inn are out; like to keep it to no more than $150 a night. The Patrick Henry Inn sounds like the closest, but some of the reviews are making me hesitate. Any suggestions? Are any of the Marriott properties in walking distance? Thanks!
Nice hotels close to historic areaThe Williamsburg Inn might be over budget, but there are other CW hotels that are much less expensive. Check out The Woodlands or Governors Inn. They are both reasonable and close. You can get info here:

We%26#39;ve had nice stays at the Hampton Inn Historic District (the one on Capitol Landing Road) - it%26#39;s about 1 mile from CW.
Nice hotels close to historic areaI have stayed at the Patrick Henry Inn; and, it is at the bottom of my list of places to stay regardless of the length of the list.
We enjoy the Lodge; but, it is over $150 a night.
I agree with previous poster to check out the Woodlands or Governor%26#39;s Inn. There may be specials available such as free admission passes to CW depending on length of stay.
Enjoy your trip to one of my favorite places!
I second the recommendation of the Woodlands- the rooms are all suite-style, and the visitors center and path to the historic area are on the grounds; also, the Williamsburg Lodge is right across the street from the Inn, and is feet from the historic area (the rooms are smaller than the Woodlands, but similar in price).
Staying at one of the Colonial Williamsburg hotels has major advantages; first, proximity, and second all of the CW hotels have bus stops for the CW bus system- perfect when you don%26#39;t have a car.
Governor%26#39;s Inn is cheap- but we%26#39;ve had less than excellent luck with cleanliness/ service.
Have an excellent stay!
Thanks for your replies! We decided to go with the Woodlands for our trip in June. I%26#39;ll be sure to post a review when we get back!
