Best time of year to visit?

My sister is planning to move to the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area and I am planning a vacation with my family of 5 to visit her. What are the best months to visit or extra busy times, like during a special event, to avoid?

Best time of year to visit?

Well, naturally the summer months tend to be the busiest, which is why a lot of locals vacation elsewhere!

The area is very nice year round with many non-beach related activities. My personal favorite time is May and then Sept-October. Warm days and little bit cooler nights, crowds are gone.

Usually, the first of June is a Sand Soccer Tournament, very fun but try to avoid that unless you really love soccer and crowds.

Neptune Festival is usually the end of Sept, a very fun ';locals'; event, but it is crowded. Here is a link to some events that are planned:

Now I think special events are the best time to be here. But anyway ... At the risk of saying the ';j'; word and scaring people away, I would avoid late July and Aug because that%26#39;s when those you-know-whats are likely to be around scaring the bejeebers out of everyone.

Yes, I like the events too. Clarksville, realize that VB has a %26#39;no bad behavior%26#39; ordinance, noise ordinance, curfew, no cussing signs around town so it%26#39;s not likely to get very out of hand.

The crowded times are more like the big name concerts when a stage is set up at the far southern end. Even then, those times we were not aware of the event in advance, we realized one could walk a couple of blocks away and not even notice crowds.

Other festivals include %26#39;sidewalk%26#39; painting on the boardwalk, sand sculpting, etc. Some festivals go on several weeks with various fun things every week.

Look at vbfun.com for event descriptions.

As far as time to go. That could depend on personal preference.

If you are in Clarksville TN you might like to feel the ocean waves right in the middle of the summer.

Or you might have enough hot weather and prefer to go to see the millions of lights and decorations in December where the family car can drive through them up the boardwalk; and do a whale watching tour.

You might like the in between weather of autumn and spring for hiking and kayaking in the natural areas.

Or you might need to deal with school vacation schedules.

The northern end and the southern end of the beach are the quieter ends and there is plenty of parking around.

Will you stay with your sister or a hotel?

Tell us what your schedule is/what you envision yourself doing there.

Since your sister is moving there you%26#39;ll have lots of occasions to visit.

Not trying to say that the events are not fun-they are. The original poster mentioned times that may be extra busy. Some people may prefer less crowds, all depends on their definition of crowded.

If you are staying at the oceanfront, you do not have to worry about finding a place to park and paying a high fee. If you are visiting or staying in, say Norfolk, you may have trouble driving in and finding parking during a festival. This is a variable that someone may not want to deal with.

For good beach weather, with some events, but not overly crowded, I would pick early June when kids are still in school. If good beach weather (not too hot, but warm enough to swim) isn%26#39;t your thing, and you really don%26#39;t want much of a crowd at all, then just avoid the late spring and summer months. To get a true taste of VB, you%26#39;d miss out if you went in late fall or winter.
