Restaurants around King George?

Can%26#39;t wait to visit Virginia.

We%26#39;ll be spending some of our time with friends in King George and would like to take these people out for dinner. What restaurants can you think of that are nice or fun or interesting. We like all kinds of food.

There doesn%26#39;t seem to be a King George ta forum.

How far a drive is it into F%26#39;burg? You can find lots of good restaurants there. We always enjoyed Merriman%26#39;s downtown and La Petite Auberge.

Is Kinsale too far away? We enjoyed a place called Good Eats - it%26#39;s a stupid name that sounds like it would serve low-class food but it was excellent. However, it%26#39;s been a couple years since I%26#39;ve been there, so I don%26#39;t know if the place still exists. It%26#39;s linked on the Northern Neck tourism webpage, but the restaurant%26#39;s page was down when I just checked.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Fredericksburg is 20+ miles one way and Kinsale is 30 miles the other way. Maybe there%26#39;s a good restaurant in between?

Let%26#39;s hope so - but I%26#39;m no help! Sorry. I hope you find a gem, and if you do, please post a review so others will know there is food to be had in King George.

I live in Maryland just across the river from King George, VA. My girfriend lives in King George and unless fast food is your game King George has nothing of any note.

I suggest you drive into Fredericksburg. Central Park has a lot of the chain places. Bonefish Grill, Olive Garden, Outback and such. A good family Mexican place is Mia Casa and it is in Central Park next to Wal-Mart and the ice rink.

Old Town Fredericksburg has some places to eat although I don%26#39;t know much about them. Lee%26#39;s homemade ice cream on Caroline Street is very good.

There is a place in Tappahanock which is about 40 minutes at the most from King George called Lowery%26#39;s. They serve seafood and beef. The raw oysters are from a local company called Bevins that is located in Kinsale, VA.

By all means GO TO COLONIAL BEACH!! It is about 15 min from King George and is a Cute little town on the Potomac. From Route 3 , take a left onto rout 205 and keep going!! The huge brand new Riverboat has just Re-Opened. It is an off track betting Casino with 2 Resturants inside. Great mile long views of beach and river. Fun place to play Keno also. The ';Happy Clam'; is on the Monroe Bay side and it has good food!!!! Also there is Wilkersons Seafood on Rt 205 as you come into town. For something ';different'; try Margarita%26#39;s Resturant. It serves peruvian food and everything is fresh and is cooked by the owner himself. Go to: colonialbeachconnection.com for a new website on the town.

Have fun!!

I second the Riverboat. My friends mom owns the place. It was a really fun place to hang before it was destroyed a few year back from a hurricane. It has now been built to vitually handle anything weatherwise.

The food has always been good and the owners Penny and Tom are real nice folks. Their son (my frined) Greg took my wife and I for a tour thru it while it was being built. The place is huge!!!

And the views are awesome.

Wikerson%26#39;s Seafood is way over rated in my opinion. I haven%26#39;t been to the Riverboat since they remodled and rebuilt after the destruction of the Hurricane. The one time I went to the Happy Clam was rather dirty.

Other options on the Maryland side and short drive from King George is Captain Billys. Not as good since Captain Billy has passed, but still give it 3 out of 5 stars. Right next door is Robertson%26#39;s. Usually the menu is the same as Billy%26#39;s just different cooks and specials.

Right in King George, on Rt 301 about 5 miles south of the Potomac River Bridge is the Crabby Oyster. I HIGHTLY recommend their seafood. They do an excellent cream of crab soup and a wide variety of dishes. They do a steamer pot combo with a bunch of different kinds of seafood served in a tin bucket, like a child%26#39;s sand pail that%26#39;s out of this world. Also recommend the fried softshells and the crabcakes.

The Crabby Oyster is in the Food Lion strip mall shopping center where Rt. 301 and Rt. 206 come together. Worth a visit.

Just over the county line going south on Rt. 301 into Caroline County is Hornes Restaurant in Port Royal. An English friend of mine likes this place so much, it%26#39;s one of his favorite restaurants in Virginia and tries to come here when he%26#39;s in the state. Horne%26#39;s is a weird combo, style-wise of sort of being like a Denny%26#39;s and sort of being a gourmet restaurant. Among their menu offerings is FRIED QUAIL which is absolutely out of this world. They are open 24 hours.

Also, kudos to King%26#39;s Pizza, in King George - on Rt. 3 in the new shopping center near where 206 comes into Rt. 3 - between the High School and the Post Office. This restaurant used to just be a little local pizza joint but with great pizza. Now they%26#39;ve moved into snazzier premises with an acutal bar and a very nice ambiance and they%26#39;ve got really good Italian food. Maybe not worth a special trip into KG from outside the county, but if you%26#39;re already in KG looking for a place to eat, it%26#39;s a good choice.

Since this post is over a year old, I doubt the original poster is still looking for a restaurant. You might want to post restaurant reviews under the Restaurants tab. That way your information will remain current and easy for future travelers to find.
