My husband and I are hoping to get to Virginia. It looks like such a great state that we can not decide where to go. Any help would be much appreciated.
We are nuts for history. If you had to pick one or two places to go in Virginia for the history lover, where would you pick? What is the best time of year to visit?
Thanks
First trip to Virginia
The Historic Triangle without question. Jamestown, where the first permanent English settlement in North America was established; Williamsburg, the colonial capitoal from 1699-1780; and Yorktown, where Cornwallis surrendered in October 1781, signifying the beginning of the end of the Revolutionary War.
There are certainly many other worthy areas in history-rich Virginia, but that%26#39;s what I%26#39;d recommend. When to visit? Spring, Fall, December. Even if you%26#39;re accustomed to Florida%26#39;s heat and humidity, your visit will be much more pleasant in the more moderate months, and sites will be less crowded for the most part. The exception to that would be Grand Illumination weekend, which is December 5 - 7 for 2008.
First trip to Virginia
If you are taking a week - The Historic Triangle as above poster mentioned, and then over to Richmond and Charlottesville.
White House of the Confederacy in Richmond, over to the waterfront for the Civil War Museum. While in Richmond take the tour of the State Capitol building.
Monticello/Ashlawn/Michie Tavern
New Market Battlefield, Frederickburg - good Civil War sites, there are many others.
Mt. Vernon and Alexandria are faves of mine; Charlottesville area as well as the mentioned triangle are great, too.
You might use these as you connect between cities and towns:
This comes in a handy print brochure too if you prefer...here it is online as well. The Civil War Trail in Va:

And then here%26#39;s the trail of Lee%26#39;s Retreat, with stops along the way to visit and experience. It is a 50 mile historical drive tracing the closing days of the Civil War as Grant pursured Lee to Lee%26#39;s surrender at Appomattox. Historic and military points of interest, countryside little changed since the Civil War:

Thanks to everyone who responded. It sounds like there are tons of exciting things to do and I can not wait to get there.
