We%26#39;re going down to UVA one morning next week (weekday) for a college visit and the info session starts at 10am. I%26#39;ve checked my AAA map and previous TA posts and everyone seems to be in agreement that it should take 2 hours. However, I have a recollection that it took me over 3 hours to make this same drive about 3 years ago when Child #1 and I visited UVA. (We left in the afternoon that time, so that could have been the difference.)
So, what would be a realistic time for us to make this drive and which route (66/29 or 95/64) would you recommend for us to get to the UVA campus the quickest? (Child #2 is hoping we don%26#39;t have to get up before the crack of dawn to make this trip!)
Thanks for your help.
Drive Time: Arlington to UVA
2:30 to 2:45 and I would suggest 66/29.
You will hit some local traffic on weekdays at that time , but not too bad going in your direction to UVA (away from DC). Allow extra + - 10 min.
Good Luck!
Drive Time: Arlington to UVA
I like Route 66 to Route 29, but am not sure if that%26#39;s fastest. I really dislike driving on I-95...
And I%26#39;m a slow driver -- it takes me a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours to drive from C%26#39;ville to Arlington doing the speed limit w/ no rush hours involved.
As you%26#39;ll probably be coming into C%26#39;ville during the morning rush on Route 29 (7 to 9 am), you%26#39;ll definitely want to add some extra time in there. I don%26#39;t think traffic will be at a standstill, but it can get a bit slow in places between the airport and UVa as people commute from counties north of C%26#39;ville into work.
So I%26#39;d say to at least plan on it taking at least 3 hours. Possibly a bit longer.
I would give yourself 3 hours door to door to factor in parking, getting where you need to be, etc. and to ensure you aren%26#39;t late.
We live in Manassas and go there often as we in have a house in Wintergreen and have never made it less than 2 hours (to C%26#39;ville itself)via 28/29 and I am closer than you.
Thanks everyone. I%26#39;m glad to know that my memory isn%26#39;t going and that I was right about that trip taking around 3 hours.
SEcond the 3 hours for door to door including parking. And a quick break for a soda/coffee along the way. We are very often up and back between centeral va and fairfax/alexandria, etc. We never go over to 95. We always go 29/66 up and 66/29 down.
another word of advice... beware of the cops in Madison County. they love to speed trap. and it is hard to spot them b/c of the bends and hills on 29.
good luck at UVA. WAHOO-WA!!!!
Looks like 66/29 is the way to go--thanks.
Also, thanks for the heads up on Madison County (although Child #2 will testify that I barely ever go over the speed limit!)
