Directions and traffic aroudn Roanoke

Realize this is Roanoke but need comments on traffic and route 220

Traveling from Baltimore area to Greensboro

Mapquest and AAA have me going I-95 to Route 85

but could be lots of traffic jams passing through DC and Richmond

Was thinking of taking

I 66 west to I 81 South

and than around Roanoke pick up 220 South

How is Roanoke traffic in early afternoon and is 202 a major roadny

Thoughts on above 2 routes greatly appreciated

Directions and traffic aroudn Roanoke

I-81 is heavy with truck traffic between Harrisonburg and Roanoke, but I%26#39;d still choose it over DC traffic.

I%26#39;ve driven 220, and I believe it is 4-lane, but I%26#39;d hate to swear to it. I have visions of a 2-lane road, but I am certain that was when we hopped off to head toward the lake.

Roanoke traffic on 81/581/220 will be light in early afternoon most days (there is road work on 81 right now near Roanoke, so check before leaving for any delays). Even at rush hour most of the time, it%26#39;s nothing like a big city. Depends on your definition of major road, I guess - 220 is more curvy than 81 and 95 (it is 4 lanes most of the way), and has some truck traffic - but compared to 95, where I%26#39;ve spent plenty of time sitting completely stopped between DC and Richmond, I%26#39;d choose it unless it%26#39;s much longer for you. Roanoke to Greensboro usually takes us about 2 1/2 hours, BTW, maybe a little less depending on traffic.
