Convenient hotels for non-driver under $150?

I%26#39;m planning a trip to Colonial Williamsburg this spring and I need some advice on a place to stay. I%26#39;m staying for 5 nights, so I%26#39;d like some place comfortable, but convenient since I won%26#39;t have access to a car. I want to be near the historical area and on a bus line near restaurants. The Woodlands hotel is too expensive. I need a hotel for under $150 a night. What do you recommend? I%26#39;ll be taking the bus from Norfolk flying there from Providence.

Convenient hotels for non-driver under $150?

Have you checked CW%26#39;s Governor%26#39;s Inn? It%26#39;s two or three blocks from the historic area, half a block from the main bus terminal. I think CW runs a shuttle there, too. Breakfast is included, and you%26#39;d be about a block or two from the Merchants Square Restaurants. They range from inexpensive (Retro%26#39;s, Cheese Shop), moderate (Seasons, Aroma%26#39;s), to oh wow (Fat Canary, Trellis).

Welcome to Williamsburg!

Yes I looked into Governor%26#39;s Inn, but my parents are nervous about me staying at a motel by myself, though I will be 30! They are paying for the trip as a birthday gift, so I%26#39;m not arguing if they want to pay more money. Also, I read on Fomer%26#39;s that the trains go by the Governor%26#39;s Inn at night and I am a very light sleeper and that will drive me crazy. I%26#39;m staying for 5 nights, so I want to be comfortable. I%26#39;m looking into the Williamsburg Hospitality House, but it%26#39;s a little pricey.

Let me set your mind at rest. The Governor%26#39;s Inn is pretty safe. And I know a very light sleeper who stayed there and was never bothered by the train or other noise! But if your folks want to pay more for elsewhere, go for it. Have you considered any of the nearby B%26amp;Bs? I haven%26#39;t looked at rates recently, but you might want to check.

I know many visitors who have complained about the trains - obviously not everyone will feel the same way about the trains, they do run right by the motel, so do consider that.

A bus from ORF? Like in public transport, or do you mean some sort of shuttle? If possible fly into PHF, much closer.

You%26#39;ve mentioned the usually lower priced places that are convenient, if the dates are driving the prices high maybe a B%26amp;B, although that could be tough.

Is renting a car possible - in the long run i think your trip would be much better - you have convenient transportation - just getting to and from the airport. You can stay in a place with your price range and be able to move around easier. If that%26#39;s not an option and you have to rely on public transport it%26#39;s a challenge. Visitors from the UK stayed at the Hampton Inn near Kingsmill last year - it is on the bus line, maybe that would work. Know it is in a business/commercial are, not CW, kind of an unappetizing option for looks of the area (safe, just not cute!)

Dear pooh bear,

How I wish that I could see CW in the spring! But I am looking forward to my 6th trip to this beautiful place in the fall. I am speaking from experience, that I too am a very light sleeper, and we have stayed a couple of nights at the Govenor%26#39;s Inn, and it%26#39;s not fancy, but it is very clean and afforadable and so close to CW. The train does run through the area, but honestly it didn%26#39;t bother either my husband or I. If you are out and about exploring and enjoying all that you can see, because there is alot of walking involved, touring CW. You are going to fall into bed at night with the best type of exhaustion.

But whatever your decision on where you chose to stay, I wish you a terrific stay, and know that I am there is spirit with you.

P.S. I can understand your parents concern about the safety issue, but reassure them, that this area ia a safe place. I too, have a son your age, and I would be voicing concerns too, but tell your parents not to worry, I wouldn%26#39;t!

Hi there...check the Woodlands prices again. I was just on the CW website, and it showed prices ranging from 119 in April to 139 in June.

Thanks everyone for your imput. I looked into the Woodlands but they only have a King suite available for $169/night for the dates I%26#39;ll be there.

Is anyone familiar with Country Inn %26amp; Suites - Williamsburg East? I%26#39;m attracted to the promise of smoke-free. I can%26#39;t tell from the map, how close it might be to restaurants and attractions. I%26#39;m also looking at the Williamsburg Hospitality House.

Renting a car is not an option because I don%26#39;t drive. I am flying Southwest into Norfolk and then taking Greyhound to Williamsburg. It%26#39;s the cheapest way for me to get there and I have always had wonderful experiences with Southwest and am leary of flying another airline and I don%26#39;t like waking up really early or traveling late at night.

I really love this site and I have learned a lot from the reviews.

i%26#39;m not sure you realize how inconvenient flying into ORF, then greyhound to williamsburg then a taxi to your hotel will be - maybe cheapest, is it so much less money than flying into PHF and taxi directly to you hotel, no matter the hour? The grey hound will not go to your hotel - so add the taxi into the cost - a taxi from PHF will go directly to your hotel. southwest has had a rash of cancellations this past week due to the safety issues with the planes. Is it already booked?

Certainly personal choice and you know your priorities, so lets work with them.

Maybe I%26#39;m wrong, do you have some disability we need to know about? It seems with your age, being solo, no driving and no early or late travel and a budget that is so finitesomething is inlfuencing these. if you prefer not to share that%26#39;s fine, it may help us help you.

is woodlands out since it is $19 a night over your $150 threshold? if so, i think the convenience and savings of not having to taxi or bus other places may come close to breaking you even. The Hospitality house is OK - near a few delis, you can walk most places.

have you had a chance to check on any rates for B%26amp;B%26#39;s?

andd in the cost of taxi from ORF to greyhound station - your travel costs are going up a LOT!!

Why not shuttle from ORF to williamsburg - I think it may be less than taxt-bus-taxi. have you looked into this?

i think the greyhound bus would be more of a safety concern than the woodland%26#39;s or governor%26#39;s inn, not exactly a great area of ORF.

If you fly Southwest into Norfolk airport you can get an airport shuttle to take you to Williamsburg. To check this out go to www.norfolkairport.com, click ground transportation, click airport shuttle, or call the shuttle service, the name is Carey VIP Connection 757 9630433 ot toll free 866 5677213. They can give you a price and other information about the shuttle. I agree with ';bridgefan'; that taking a taxi to the Norfolk Greyhound Station, then a bus to Williamsburg, could be difficult and confusing. You might have to wait a long time for the bus in a place with alot of noise and it may not be safe for you.

Once when I was on vacation, I found the perfect hotel but it was too expensive. I ended up staying at the perfect hotel because I changed my vacation to 4 days instead of 5 days and the 1 less day saved enough money so I could afford it. Maybe you could do the same thing. Hope you enjoy your Williamsburg trip.
