We are planning a 6-day trip to the historic triangle beginning 3/19/08. We are flying into Newport News and staying at one of the Colonial Houses, and we%26#39;d like to visit CW, Jamestown and Yorktown (no interest in Busch Gardens).
My question is, do we need a rental car or will the shuttle busses suffice?
Car needed for historic triangle trip?I think you will find it much more convenient to have a rental car. Call CW (1-800-HISTORY, 1-800-447-8679) and ask about the shuttle schedule. I%26#39;m not sure if the Historic Triangle shuttle to the Jamestown and Yorktown sites will be running the regular schedule before Easter Mar. 23.
Car needed for historic triangle trip?I called; the shuttles will start running March 17, which is also the day that the programming for Revolutionary City will start.
Let us know if you have further questions. Welcome to Williamsburg!
I think a car is a must. the shuttles operate - just not very convenient, you have little flexibility are limited to the areas it goes. The WAT (willaimsburg area transit) buses are available, again limited and can take quite a while to get anywhere dpeending on your start/stop point. I was with a W%26amp;M student recently who was doing a research paper on people with needs for community services - of which we in general do a great job. He went from the movies in New Town to Merchant%26#39;s Square on the WAT bus (about 1.6 miles) and it took over an hour!! Going the other direction about 15 minutes.
How will you arrive in Williamsburg from PHF? Taxi about $25-30.
If you decide to rent a car look at rates for all, including Enterprise - they usually have good rates
enjoy - the weather today was spectacular - hopefully it will in a few weeks - it can be quite chilly %26amp; windy mid-march, so check weather right before you leave.
6 days is a long time - you should be able to relax - and if you have that car spread out some
You definetly should rent a car. It does not make sense to travel all the way to Williamsburg to wait on the bus stop. Taxi service is very spotty. A car will allow you the freedom to experience all that the historic triangle has to offer.
PS. You just have to watch the posted speed limits. They are very very stingent here and fines with surcharge can be a couple of hundred dollars.
Thanks - you all have been *very* helpful. I initially posted the question because my husband and I were disagreeing about this - he%26#39;s going to hate that I was right! :)
