My husband and I are thinking of visiting Shenandoah in May. We would like to stay at Skyland or Big Meadows Lodge. Can anyone tell me what there is to do there, should we stay the entire week, or is only a few days sufficient enough. Are there other places close to the park worth driving to and visiting?
Any suggestions would be great.
Much thanks...
Visiting Shenandoah in MayShenandoah NP is beautiful, Skyline Drive, 105 miles from Front Royal (north) to Waynesboro (south), is one of the prettiest roads in the US with many great overlooks. Both lodges are nice, I%26#39;ve stayed at Skyland but Big Meadows is a favorite of many, check out the reviews. There are numerous scenic trails to meet every hiking ability, best to stop at the visitors center, tell them your interests, etc and they will provide reccommendations and trail maps. Visit www.nps.gov/shen for trip planning ideas and more Park information. There are wonderful towns along the way, ie. Luray where you can visit Luray Caverns, several wineries are nearby, and at the end of Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway begins 469 miles of more beautiful scenery all the way to Great Smoky Mountain NP. You can also visit Charlottesville (Monticello, University of Va), just about an hour east on I64 from Waynesboro. Hope this gets you started, post again with any other questions, there are several people quite knowledgable of the area that frequent the forum (they help me often). Happy trails.
Visiting Shenandoah in Maysorry to jump in on the thread, but just wondering if the first part of SLD is more scenic or is it all great? We don%26#39;t have the 4 or so hours it takes to drive the whole way from Front Royal to Waynesboro so thinking to drive from Front ROyal to Luray and then go back onto the highway from there onto Roanoke.
LOVETHEUSA, I think you%26#39;ll really enjoy the drive between Front Royal and Luray, Skyline Drive is a beautiful road with many scenic overlooks. Happy trails.
